Kaisey Mandel holds an interdisciplinary faculty position in astrostatistics jointly at the Institute of Astronomy and the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at the University of Cambridge. He previously held postdoctoral positions at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and Imperial College London. His research focuses on developing advanced statistical methods for using Type Ia supernovae as standardizeable candles to determine precise and accurate cosmological distances and trace the history of cosmic expansion. This is important for constraining the properties of the mysterious dark energy driving the accelerating expansion of the Universe. He is more generally interested in probabilistic methods for quantifying uncertainty in astronomical inferences. His research interests include supernova cosmology, time-domain and transient astronomy, astrostatistics and astroinformatics, machine learning, and Bayesian modeling, inference, and computation.
